Egyptian Cat

Egyptian Cat

Inspired by the Terry Pratchett quote, “In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this.” I made an Egyptian Cat graphic in Illustrator.

“In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this.” -Terry Pratchett

Research

My first step was research. I went on google and found reference photos of a cat, an Egyptian statue, Egyptian symbols and color scheme.

Illustrator File

Once I have the assets I need, I’ll make a new Illustrator file and adjust the settings depending on how I’ll be using the file. For this project, I’ll be using the final image on the web like my Instagram and webpage. Since this file will be used on the web, with its prime destination being Instagram, the size will be 1080 px by 1080 px. The color mode will be RGB.

Process

To make the cat body I used a mix of the Pen Tool, Rectangle Tool, Ellipse Tool and Shape Builder Tool. I made the head with the circle tool and adjusted the shape with the Selection Tool. For the more organic shapes like the tail and feet I used the Pen Tool. To unite all the shapes I used the Shape Builder Tool.

This process was repeated with the Egyptian symbols. I used the images of symbols as reference, adjusting to my own aesthetics. I used the Pen Tool, Rectangle Tool, Ellipse Tool and Shape Builder Tool.

Saving The File

Once I was finished with the image, I hid my reference material. Then I put a rectangle above the whole image and made a clipping mask. I saved it as a png at 72 DPI. For an in-depth tutorial watch my video below.

Thank you!
